A brooch for Jessie

This unusual wooden, painted brooch was designed by George Bain for his beloved wife Jessie. They were married in 1908 and Bain designed many pieces for her, until her death in 1957.

The front of the brooch is decorated with large knotwork and small key pattern panels. They’ve been painstakingly painted in black, red and cream, making the design really stand out. The circular bright blue setting is held between the heads of two red-eyed beasts.

The Gaelic inscription on the reverse translates as ‘designed by George Bain’.
